CUNYAC WEEKLY AWARDS – October 9, 2012

 

CUNYAC/Metro PCS Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week

Jessica Wu, Baruch

Outside Hitter/Sophomore/Cerritos, CA/Cerritos

Jessica Wu has been named the CUNYAC/Metro PCS Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week for the second time this season. The Bearcat continues to pile on the accolades for her second season. The 2011 CUNYAC Rookie of the Year began her week against Montclair State with 13 kills and 15 digs as she recorded a double-double en route to a 3-0 victory. Wu came up big in the next game as she notched 17 kills and 17 digs with a .389hitting percentage as Baruch won 3-1 over Plattsburgh State. That same day Baruch won over Medaille 3-0 as the sophomore recorded her third consecutive double-double of the week with 10 kills and 12 digs to go along with an outstanding .450 hitting percentage. Throughout her 12 sets, she compiled 44 kills and 46 digs with a .361 hitting percentage.

 

CUNYAC/Metro PCS Women’s Volleyball Rookie of the Week

McKenzie Davidson, Baruch

Outside Hitter/Freshman/Rancho Santa Margarita, CA/Trabuco Hills

McKenzie Davidson has been named the CUNYAC/Metro PCS Women’s Volleyball Rookie of the Week for the second consecutive week and third time overall. Over 12 sets played, the freshman racked up 27 kills and 47 digs as Baruch went 4-0 in the week. In a game against Plattsburgh, Davidson tallied eight kills and 24 digs as the Bearcats were victorious 3-1. Following up the performance against Medaille, the California native registered nine kills and 10 digs as Baruch won 3-0. Finishing out the week against Centenary, the Bearcat compiled 7 kills with a .312 hitting percentage in the 3-0 victory.

 

 

CUNYAC/Applebee’s Women’s Soccer Player of the Week

Demi Jean Martorano, Staten Island

Forward/Junior/Staten Island, NY/New Dorp

Demi Jean Martorano has been announced the CUNYAC/Applebee’s Women’s Soccer Player of the Week. In two games this week, the junior compiled an amazing eight goals and two assists. In the first game of the week, Martorano scored five goals and assisted on two others as the Dolphins’ dominated Brooklyn 14-4. Following up that performance, the Staten Island native scored three goals against John Jay as CSI was victorious 5-0. The two conference wins improve the Dolphins’ record to 7-3 overall and 4-0 in conference play as they remain tied with CCNY atop the conference standings.

 

CUNYAC/Applebee’s Women’s Soccer Rookie of the Week

Olusawayo Alo, Lehman

Midfielder/Freshman/Bronx, NY/Emmanuel Comprehensive

Olusawayo Alo has been named the CUNYAC/Applebee’s Women’s Soccer Rookie of the Week. In Lehman’s lone game against Medgar Evers, the freshman scored two goals and assisted on two others as the Lightning triumphed 8-0. The victory brings Lehman to 2-2 in conference play and 4-5 overall.

 

CUNYAC/Applebee’s Men’s Soccer Player of the Week

Nedgy Nazon, Staten Island

Forward/Junior/Brooklyn, NY/Canarsie

Nedgy Nazon has been named the CUNYAC/Applebee’s Men’s Soccer Player of the Week. In two games, Nazon accumulated an outstanding 11 points on five goals and one assist. Against the conference leading Bloodhounds, the junior scored two goals and picked up one assist. He followed up that performance with three goals including the game winner in a 4-0 win over Hunter. The Dolphins sit in third place after the 1-1 week.

 

CUNYAC/Applebee’s Men’s Soccer Rookie of the Week

Edward Humphreys, Baruch

Midfield-Forward/Freshman/East Fishkill, NY/John Jay HS

Edward Humphreys has been named the CUNYAC/Applebee’s Men’s Soccer Rookie of the Week. The freshman played in two conference games this week as Baruch improved its conference record to 4-0-2. In a 4-0 victory against York, Humphreys did not score but helped to apply pressure throughout the game recording one shot on goal. He followed up his performance against Medgar applying pressure but achieving more tangible results. In the 5-0 win over the Cougars, the rookie had three goals on just three shots including the eventual game winning goal. His hat-trick represented Humphreys’ first goals of the year but he has been a valuable attacking player on the flanks throughout the season.

 

 

CUNYAC/U.S. Army Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week

Elizabeth Mahoney, Hunter

Senior/Auburn, NY/Auburn HS

Elizabeth Mahoney has been named the CUNYAC/US Army Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week for the third consecutive week. At the NJIT Invitational in Newark, New Jersey, Hawk captain placed 16th out of 131 runners. Her time of 19:20.29 in the 5K landed her first place out of all CUNY runners. The 2011 CUNYAC Runner of the Year would help Hunter place 9th out of the tough 15 team field.

 

CUNYAC/U.S. Army Women's Cross Country Rookie of the Week

Sarah Salazar, CCNY

Freshman/Colorado Springs, CO/Roy J. Wasson HS

Sarah Salazar was named the CUNYAC/US Army Women's Cross Country Rookie of the Week. The Beaver ran at the York Invitational in the Bronx, NY with 122 other runners. The freshman finished in seventh place overall, second among CUNY runners, and first among four-year CUNY runners with a personal best 27:20. Her effort led to an outstanding second place finish for CCNY out of 21 teams.

 

CUNYAC/U.S. Army Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week

Justin Lee, Hunter

Sophomore/Flushing, NY/Townsend Harris

Justin Lee has been announced the CUNYAC/US Army Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week for the second time this season. Lee continues Hunter’s sweep of CUNYAC weekly awards as the Hawks have earned all five Athlete of the Week accolades. The sophomore ran against tough competition at the NJIT Invitational in Newark, New Jersey. His time of 28:18.71 was good for 50th out of 130 runners but first for all CUNY runners. His effort helped Hunter finish 14th out of 19 teams.

 

CUNYAC/U.S. Army Men’s Cross Country Rookie of the Week

Samuel Obesanya, Staten Island

Freshman/Staten Island, NY/St. Peter’s

Samuel Obesanya has been announced the CUNYAC/US Army Men's Cross Country Rookie of the Week for the second consecutive time. At the York Invitational in the Bronx, New York, the rookie finished with a personal best time of 28:49.68. The Dolphin’s effort would lead to a third place finish overall and help his team finish 2nd out of the 14 team competition.

 

CUNYAC/Hospital for Special Surgery Women’s Tennis Player of the Week

Yuliya Orkis, Brooklyn

#1 Singles #1 Doubles/  Sophomore/  Brooklyn, NY/  St.Edmund Prep

Yuliya Orkis has been named the CUNYAC/Hospital for Special Surgery Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for the second time. The Brooklyn Bulldogs Captain was able to dominate with her presence and maintain her spectacular performance throughout the week. On October 3 in singles play against Lehman's Nellya Blinova, Orkis defeated her opponent 6-0,6-0. In doubles play with partner Norma Lynn Chabbott, the pair won their match 8-2 against Nellya Blinova and Marisela Camano. The Bulldog continued her success on October 5 in singles play against Kelly McNamee of St. Joseph's with a 6-0,6-0 win. In doubles play against Victoria LaBosco and Kelly McNamee, Orkis and partner Liana Rivkin scored another 9-0 win for their team.The leader continued her streak in singles play against Baruch Bearcat Patricia Correia, securing a 6-0,6-0 victory. The team's 3-0 week contributed to an increased overall record of 7-2 and CUNYAC record of 5-0. Orkis has had a successful season to date, winning the September HSS Scholar Athlete of the Month and Player of the Week for the second time this school year. In 2011 she was recognized as the CUNYAC Women's Tennis Player of the Year. 

 

CUNYAC/Hospital for Special Surgery Women’s Tennis Rookie of the Week

Angelina Usherenko, Hunter

#5 Singles #3 Doubles/ Freshman/ Brooklyn, NY/ Edward R. Murrow

Angelina Usherenko has been named the CUNYAC/Hospital for Special Surgery Women’s Tennis Rookie of the Week. Usherenko has only lost 1 doubles and 1 singles match in CUNY play against Brooklyn. The Brooklyn native is dominating at 5th singles, beating out York's Sohani Sookedeo 6-1, 6-1 as well as Lehman's Danielle Buckley 6-0, 6-0.  In doubles play, with teammate, Stephanie Ahwireng, the duo defeated Sohani Sookdeo and Taliah Cudjoe of York 8-3. Last week, the team won 8-1 against York and 9-0 against Lehman and was overall 2-0 against CUNYAC opponents.
