ST.
PAUL, Minn. -- The 2012 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (MIAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships featured
a number of outstanding performances and unforgettable moments over
the weekend at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn. Wednesday, the
best of those performances were honored as the conference announced
the 2012 MIAC Women's Outdoor Track and Field Awards.
Nearly every team in the conference - led by conference-champion
St. Thomas - delivered a highlight throughout the weekend and that
parity was reflected in Wednesday's award announcement. Host school
Concordia claimed two of the top honors as Kaari
Jensen's heptathlon score was named Women's Outstanding
Performance-of-the-Meet and Head Coach Marv Roeske
was voted the Women's Coach-of-the-Year. Augsburg sprinter
Ashley Carney received the Outstanding Women's
Track Athlete award, and Hamline thrower Becky
Culp was named the Outstanding Women's Field Athlete.
The top three finishers in each individual event were named
automatic All-Conference, as well as the first-place team in each
relay race. Individuals in places 4-6 and relay teams in places 2-6
received All-Conference Honorable Mention honors. To see the
All-Conference honorees, view results from the meet here.
As part of a conference-wide sportsmanship initiative, the MIAC
selected the sixth annual All-MIAC Sportsmanship team for Women's
Outdoor Track & Field. Members of the All-MIAC Sportsmanship
team are selected by their coaches and teammates as individuals who
demonstrate ideals of positive sportsmanship both on and off the
field of competition.
Outstanding Women's Track Athlete - Ashley Carney,
Augsburg
-Augsburg sprinter Ashley Carney (Lakeville, Minn./South) claimed
the unofficial title of the MIAC's fastest woman by sweeping the
conference titles in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, leading to her
official honor as Outstanding Women's Track Athlete. Carney won the
200 with a time of 24.93 seconds, and was even better in the 100.
Her time of 11.89 with a 3.0 wind factor is the fastest in meet
history - beating the old record of 11.96 - and that time currently
ranks her third in all of NCAA Division III in 2012. Just a junior,
Carney is the latest outstanding Augsburg sprinter, and will have a
chance to repeat in both events in 2013.
Outstanding
Women's Field Athlete -
Becky Culp, Hamline
-Hamline has become known for its prowess in the throwing events,
and junior Becky Culp (Lino Lakes, Minn.) proved over the weekend
that she was ready to carry the legacy forward in 2012. Culp was
tremendous at the MIAC meet, claiming titles in both the shot put
and discus. She won the shot put championship with a throw that
traveled 42-11 to finish first by three inches. She claimed nearly
an eight-foot victory in the discus as well, with a winning toss of
146-6. Culp entered the meet seeded No. 1 in both events, and lived
up to the billing to result in her Outstanding Women's Field
Athlete honor.
Women's
Outstanding Performance-of-the-Meet - Kaari Jensen, Concordia
-Concordia's Kaari Jensen (Pierz, Minn.) didn't just win
the 2012 MIAC women's heptathlon title. She broke both MIAC and
school records in the process with a score of 4,829, which is the
second-best score recorded in all of Division III in 2012,
resulting in the Women's Outstanding Performance-of-the-Meet award.
Jensen's score is more the 500 points better than anyone else in
the conference this season, and she bettered the 7-year-old MIAC
record of 4,668, which was set by Saint Mary's Ashley Dingels in
2005.
Women's
Coach-of-the-Year -
Marv Roeske, Concordia
-In addition to serving as host of the 2012 MIAC Outdoor Track and
Field Championships, Concordia Head Coach Marv Roeske guided his
team to a tremendous performance, finishing second with 120.5
points, which earned him the Women's Coach-of-the-Year honor.
Roeske's team was particularly good in the field events, winning
individual titles in the 400-meter hurdles, javelin, high jump and
heptathlon, highlighted by Jensen's school and MIAC record in the
heptathlon and her Performance-of-the-Meet award. Roeske has been
the Cobbers' women's track and field coach since 1995, and he added
cross country duties in 199 as well. This is his second outdoor
coaching honor, and fifth overall MIAC coaching award, last winning
the outdoor award in 2004.
