MANSFIELD, Conn. – Sophomore Devin Fellman (New Port Richey, Fla.) launched a three-run blast to center field and senior Hayley Feindel (River Edge, La.) tossed a two hitter as the fifth-seeded United States Coast Guard Academy upset in-state rival and top-seeded Eastern Connecticut State University by a score of 5-0 on Friday afternoon at the 2012 NCAA Division-III Softball Willimantic Regional.
The Warriors, ranked second in the latest NFCA coaches poll, see their 40-game win streak snapped as Coast Guard's Feindel (21-8), already the NCAA all-time win and strikeout leader, extends her totals to 124 victories and 1,449 strikeouts.
Findel and her Eastern Connecticut counterpart, senior Molly Rathbun (Hebron, Conn.) matched zeroes in the run column in the first three innings.
With two outs, Coast Guard senior Jamie Kim (Irvine, Calif.) and freshman Erin Lisko (Waynesboro, Pa.) each drove in a run on back-to-back singles to center field. They were followed by Fellman's three-run homer to dead center field.
The outburst by the Bears would be the difference as neither team scored down the stretch.
Rathbun shouldered the defeat as she slips to 30-2 in the season after allowing five runs on eight hits with six strikeouts. Junior Christine Akcer (Milford, Conn.) tossed a pair of scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts in relief for the Warriors.
Junior Kassondra Silva (Hamden, Conn.) and Rathbun each had a hit for the regional hosts.
Bears freshman Jessica Richardson (Kent, Wash.) and Lisko each collected a pair of hits in the contest.
Coast Guard returns to Mansfield tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. to take on the winner of today's final game between St. John Fisher and Tufts. Eastern Connecticut plays University of Rochester tomorrow morning at 11:00 a.m. in an elimination bracket contest.
