WESTFIELD, Mass. – Senior forward Bryan Canter had a goal and two assists to lift Fitchburg State University to a 5-2 victory over Westfield State University in MASCAC ice hockey action on Saturday evening, Feb. 18.
Fitchburg improves to 9-12-3 overall and 8-7-2 in the conference with a regular season game remaining on Tuesday, Feb. 21 when it hosts Plymouth State.
Westfield is 6-13-5 overall and finishes MASCAC play in sixth place at a 4-10. The Owls host Franklin Pierce on Tuesday, Feb. 21, in a non-conference game then play in the quarterfinals of the MASCAC postseason tournament on Saturday, Feb. 25.
The Owls took a short-lived 1-0 lead on a power play goal by freshman Steve Evans midway through the first period. Canter knotted the score with a power play goal just over two minutes later.
The Falcons scored twice in the second period to take a 3-1 lead. The visitors went ahead 4-1 with 5:35 remaining in the game on a goal by Kris Threlkeld, with Canter getting credit for his second assist.
Westfield's Lucas Romero scored a power play goal 36 seconds later, but Fitchburg closed out the scoring on Travis Bertolotti's empty net goal with 15 seconds remaining.
Westfield outshot Fitchburg, 45-32, with Falcon goalie Randy Wolcott recording 43 saves.
