Western New England tops ECAC Northeast rival Becker 6-2 for third straight victory

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Freshman forward Brandon Stroud (Clarksville, IN) had two goals and two assists while sophomore goalie Eric Sorenson (Fairport, NY) compiled 31 saves in leading the Western New England men's hockey team to a 6-2 victory over Becker Saturday night (Dec. 3) at Smead Arena.

The Golden Bears improved their record to 6-2 with their third consecutive win and moved to 3-1 in the ECAC Northeast. The Hawks drop to 3-7 and 1-3 in the league.

It was another strong team effort as sophomore forward Brian Prost (Parma, OH) contributed three assists and sophomore forward Trent Krueger (White Bear Lake, MN) a goal and assist. Freshman defenseman Adam Bristol (Carmel, IN) chipped-in with a pair of assists.

Western New England took a 1-0 lead in the opening period when Krueger scored at the 17:17 mark with assists from Stroud and Prost.

Becker tied the contest on a goal by junior forward David Graham (Rancho Cucamongo, CA) at 4:57 of the second stanza. Senior forward Brian Murray (Manalapan, NJ) gained the assist.

Stroud fired home a shot at 6:40 with Bristol and Prost earning assists.

The Golden Bears then extended their lead to 4-1 by scoring a pair of power play goals in a 1:37 span.

Sophomore forward Chris Connors (Albany, NY) notched the game-winner at 15:51 as Stroud and Prost again teamed on the assists. Stroud then netted his second goal at 17:28 with help from Krueger and Bristol.

Becker climbed back into the contest when senior forward Robert Johnson (Fenton, MI) scored an 5:47 of the third period to get within 4-2. Sophomore forward Dan Kane (Staten Island, NY) had the assist.

Western New England stretched its lead to 5-2 when sophomore forward Dan Monahan (Monroe, NJ) scored at the 11:30 mark following an assist from sophomore forward Alan Martin (Monson, MA).

Senior forward Kory Grahl (San Diego, CA) added an empty net goal at 18:03 with an assist from sophomore defenseman Cam Napolitan (East Longmeadow, MA) to complete the scoring.

Sorenson had another top performance making 14 of his saves in the final period.

Senior goalie Jake Rosenthal (Wantagh, NY) stopped 30 saves and allowed four goals in 37 minutes, 28 seconds. Sophomore Shaun Millerick (Hampton, NH) came in relief and made 12 saves with just one goal in 20 minutes, 32 seconds.
