Chatham adds men, five sports for 2015-16

Chatham's relatively new gym seats 600.

As part of a three-phase transformation to a co-educational institution, Chatham, a member of the Presidents' Athletic Conference, will sponsor additional varsity sports.

Beginning in the 2015-2016 academic year, the university will sponsor the following men's sports: basketball, cross country, swimming & diving, track & field, and volleyball. The school already sponsors women's sports in basketball, cross country, ice hockey, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, track & field, and volleyball.

Chatham has seen its female undergraduate enrollment slip from just over 700 in 2008 to 543 full-time equivalent last fall. The school is the latest in a long string of small women's colleges in Division III to admit male undergrads and add men's sports. William Peace played a full men's basketball schedule this past season for the first time, while Wilson College is adding men's basketball this upcoming season.
