Springfield and Stevens have been selected as hosts of the first two Division III men's volleyball championships, in 2012 and 2013, according to the NCAA.
Men's volleyball's total sponsorship reached 50 schools, meaning the sport qualifies for an NCAA national championship for the first time at the D-III level.
The 2012 finals will be April 27-29 at Springfield’s Blake Arena in Springfield, Mass. The 2013 finals are April 26-28 at Canavan Arena in Hoboken, N.J., on the Stevens campus. The format of the championships is still up in the air. It was originally envisioned as a one-weekend, eight-team tournament, but added growth in men's volleyball since the NCAA's January announcement means that the championship would expand as well.
In Division III team sports, there is one NCAA Tournament berth allotted for every 6.5 teams that sponsor the sport. The size of the championship will be determined in the fall of 2011, once sport-sponsorship numbers are set.
