CLAREMONT,
Calif. -- The Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC)
sent 39 entries to the 2012 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and
Field Championships over the weekend, and the conference closed the
season on a high note, with 16 All-American performances and 18
finishers in the top 10 in their respective events.
On the men's side, MIAC student-athletes turned in five top-three
finishes, highlighted by distance and middle-distance runners from
Hamline, St. Thomas and Bethel. The Pipers' talented duo of Devin
Monson and Jack Deichert were tremendous at the national meet,
hosted by Claremont-Scripps-Mudd in Claremont, Calif. Monson earned
a pair of All-American honors, finishing third in both the 5,000-
(14:21.78) and 10,000-meter runs (30:36.73) while Deichert was the
runner-up in the 1,500-meter run (3:55.86).
St. Thomas senior Mike Hutton equaled Deichert's finish, scoring second place in the men's 800-meter run with a time of 1:49.78. Hutton's teammate Ben Sathre earned All-America honors in the 5K, placing sixth in 14:28.18, and Bethel also had a pair of middle-distance All-Americans. The Royals' Matt Schafer was right behind Hutton in the 800 in third (1:50.61), while Zach Haskins was seventh in the 1,500 (3:57.11) to give Bethel another All-American finish.
The MIAC women had 24 entries in the meet, and also impressed with seven individual All-American honors, and a pair of St. Thomas All-American relay teams. The Tommies finished fifth in the 4x400-meter relay, with Angela Tipp, Erika Tipp, Larissa Peyton and Emily Van Heel finishing in 3:48.08, and Van Heel, Angela Tipp, Mallory Burnham and Christina Rosezke were seventh in the 4x100 (47.41). Taylor Berg gave UST another All-American performance with her seventh-place finish in the 1,500-meter run (4:30.53).
Hamline's Becky Culp had the top MIAC finish on the women's side with a distance of 45.08 meters (147-11 feet) to take third in the discus. Teammate Brenna Coyle added to the Pipers' success, finishing seventh in the hammer throw (52.18 meters/171-02 feet). The other top-five MIAC performance came courtesy of Concordia's Kaari Jensen, who racked up 4,825 points to finish fourth in the women's heptathlon.
Augsburg's Ashley Carney was seventh in 100-meter dash with a time of 12.01 seconds. Allyson Voss from Gustavus cleared the pole vault bar at 3.85 meters (12-07.50 feet) to finish seventh as well, and Carleton senior Simone Childs-Walker capped her amazing career with an eight-place finish and another All-American honor in the women's 10,000-meter run (36:39.04).
The Hamline men were the MIAC's top finisher in the team standings, taking 12th with a total score of 20 points. The St. Thomas men were 10 spots back at No. 22 with 11 points, and Bethel's eight points put the Royals in a tie for 32nd. In the women's team standings, St. Thomas and Hamline tied for 28th with eight points apiece. Concordia tied for 48th with five points, Gustavus and Augsburg tied for 68th with two points and Carleton had one point to tie for 73rd.
The
top eight finishers in each event - both individual events and
relays - earn automatic All-American honors. McMurry claimed the
men's national championship, with Wartburg winning the Division III
