ST.
PAUL, Minn. -- The University of St. Thomas used a strong spring
season to put the finishing touches on the 2011-12 MIAC All-Sports
Competition championship for both genders. Not only did UST win
four of the six available spring conference championships (two men,
two women), but the Tommies set a MIAC record by claiming 13 total
titles throughout the 2011-12 season.
St. Thomas used eight men's conference championships in 2011-12 to
capture the MIAC Men's All-Sports Trophy, which is the George
Durenberger Trophy, donated by Saint John's University in 1972-73.
The Tommies rode five titles to the women's All-Sports Trophy
championship. The women's honor was donated by Macalester College
in 1983-84 and is named the Pat Weisner Trophy. The MIAC All-Sports
Competition began on the men's side in 1962-63, and the women's
competition was added in 1983-84.
This is the fifth-straight sweep for UST, as 2006-07 was the last time different schools won the men's (Saint John's) and women's (Gustavus) teams claimed the All-Sports Trophies. This is the 26th All-Sports men's title for St. Thomas, and the 21st women's honor. The previous conference record of 12 combined titles in one academic year was set by St. Thomas in 1990-91.
This
spring, the Tommie men added MIAC titles in baseball and outdoor
track and field to the championships they had already claimed in
football, men's golf, swimming and diving, indoor track and field,
men's hockey and a co-championship in men's basketball. UST
finished with 99.5 total points to win by more than 20 points.
The race for runner-up status was extremely tight, as a number of
school's had a great year on the men's side. Gustavus, which added
the men's tennis title to its great season, was the second-place
finisher with 79 total points. St. Olaf was just a point behind in
third at 78 points, and Saint John's was a close fourth at
73.5.
Bethel finished fifth with a total of 63.5. Hamline (53.5) edged
Carleton (53) by a half-point for sixth place. Augsburg was eighth
at 41.5, Concordia finished ninth at 34.5, Macalester was 10th
(30.5) and Saint Mary's (25.5) rounded out the men's standings.
On the women's side, the Tommies also claimed two of the three
spring titles, capturing the softball and outdoor track and field
championships to go along with a shared title in volleyball and the
indoor track and field and basketball crowns. UST racked up 104.5
total points, and won a close battle with runner-up Gustavus by
just five points, as the Gusties had a total of 99.5.
Just
like in the men's race, St. Olaf earned a top-three spot with 90
points. Saint Benedict was fourth at 84 and Concordia (79.5) edged
Carleton (75.5) for the final spot in the top five. Bethel was
seventh with 61 points, Macalester (46) and Augsburg (42) were
close for eighth and ninth, St. Catherine (39.5) claimed 10th over
Hamline (39) by a half-point, and Saint Mary's was just 1.5 points
behind the Pipers to round out the standings.
