Cobbers Roll Over Scots

ST. PAUL, Minn. (10/12/11)—No.9-ranked Concordia controlled the tempo of play from the very first serve against Macalester on Wednesday and rolled over the Scots 25-9, 25-16, 25-17 in a match that lasted only 57 minutes. The Cobbers are now 6-1 in MIAC play and have won all six matches by 3-0 sweeps.

"The key for us tonight was that we played at our tempo," said head coach Tim Mosser. ""We did a great job of picking up the pace and forcing Macalester to play at our speed."

Concordia (17-3) trailed only three times during the entire match. Concordia fell behind 2-1 in the very first set but then went on a 7-0 run to turn a 6-5 advantage into a 14-5 cushion. They bolted out of the gate in the second set, winning nine of the first 11 points and then coasting to the 25-16 win. The third set was the tightest of the three. With the score tied at 8-8, CC went on a 4-0 run to grab a 12-8 lead and then watched as the Scots got to within 18-17 before making one final push and winning seven consecutive points to close out the match.

Another key for Concordia was their ability to keep the Macalester defense on their heels with their serves and then get the Cobber frontline players the ball with pin-point passing. "Our service and passing games were at a very high level tonight," commented Mosser. "Our offense was set up by our great passing the entire match."

The Cobbers had all 15 players factor into the box score. CC senior outside hitter Jenna Green, who was the recipient of the outstanding passing attack, finished the match with 11 kills and also added eight digs. "We got the ball to Jenna early and often," said Mosser. "And anytime we can do that, we are going to be ok."

Kayla Hampton had a career match for CC. She put down a season-best 11 winners for the three sets. Hampton's previous season best total was two. She was the only other player besides Green to finish with more than 10 kills in the match. Senior setter Amy Sykora finished with a match-high 24 assists and has now had at least 20 helpers in 10 straight matches and 18 of the 20 contests this season. Sophomore Sammi Post tied a season-high for digs as she came away with seven in the match.

Macalester (5-16/0-7 MIAC) was led by Taylor Tinkham who had eight kills and three blocks.

Concordia will have Homecoming weekend off before hosting their final non-conference matches of the season. The Cobbers will square off against Mayville State and UM-Morris on Tuesday, Oct. 18. CC will play Mayville at 3 p.m. and then turn around and host Morris at 7 p.m.
