MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/28/11)—Led by their four seniors, No.12-ranked Concordia seized control of the match with No.11-ranked St. Thomas in the first 11 points of the first set, never took their foot off the gas pedal and swept the Tommies 25-20, 25-21, 25-23.
It was the first time the four super seniors for the Cobbers had beaten St. Thomas and marked the first time the Tommies had been swept in a MIAC regular-season contest since the 2006 season. The 2006 campaign was also the last time Concordia had come away with a victory against UST.
With the win the Cobbers jump into a five-way tie for first place in the MIAC. Both the Tommies and Bethel, the two previously unbeaten teams in the conference, lost on Wednesday bringing five teams all together at the top of the standings with a 3-1 record.
Concordia has now defeated six teams ranked in the top 25 of the AVCA national poll. Of those six wins, three have been by three-set sweeps. The Cobbers are now 14-3 overall while the Tommies lose for only the third time this season and fall to 13-3.
The Cobbers' frontline proved to be the difference maker the entire match. Concordia used its height advantage to continually come up with key kills and clutch blocks. The Cobbers hit .182 on the night while the CC defense limited UST to a season worst .078 attack percentage. It is the first time that St. Thomas has been held under .100 in attack percentage since the final match of the 2009 season.
The Concordia senior frontline trio of Ashley Beseman, Jenna Green and Katie Vohnoutka routinely came up with key points. The three accounted for 37.0 of the team's 52.0 offensive points. Beseman had a pair of kills to close out the second set and finished with nine winners on the night. Green had 10 kills to go along with 19 digs and Vohnoutka came away with team highs in kills (11) and blocks (7).
Amy Sykora, the Cobbers' fourth senior, led the offense from her setter position. She put the CC hitters in the right spot all night long and came away with 36 assists.
Allison Bruggeman led the non-seniors for Concordia. She had six kills and eight digs while defensive specialist Rachel Wiinanen recorded 13 digs.
The Tommies had only one player with more than eight kills in the match. Kelly Foley had a match-high 12 winners and also had a pair of blocks. Ashley Maher had 26 assists and Kaitlan Wachter finished with a match-high 20 digs.
Concordia will now have an extended break before their next match. The Cobbers will have nine days off before returning to action against St. Olaf on Friday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. That match is the first part of CC's annual back-to-back conference road match weekend. Concordia will then head south to Winona to play St. Mary's on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 3 p.m.
