The Centre men's lacrosse team saw its six-game winning streak come to an end as Birmingham Southern came from behind in the fourth quarter to win 16-14 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference game Friday in Birmingham, Ala.
The teams came into the contest tied for second place in the SCAC, but the loss drops Centre to 11-3 overall and 6-2 in the conference while Birmingham Southern improves to 12-3 with a 7-1 record in league play.
Zack Connors (Louisville, Ky.), Connor Stubbs (Decatur, Ga.) and Wesley Hardman (Narragansett, R.I.) each scored three goals to lead the Colonels while Peter Murphy (Louisville, Ky.) had a game-high four assists.
The game was close throughout after Birmingham Southern scored the first two goals of the game with the Colonels answering with two of their own to tie the score. The teams finished the first quarter tied at three before Centre scored three straight in the second quarter to take a 6-4 lead to halftime.
Centre would increase its lead to as many as four in the third quarter after a Hardman goal at the 8:14 mark and took that lead to the fourth after Connors scored with one second on the clock. However, it was the fourth quarter where the Panthers made their surge, scoring six straight goals in just over six minutes. A goal by Stubbs at the 7:29 mark pulled the Colonels within one at 15-14, but it would be the only other score would come from Birmingham with 10 seconds remaining.
Also scoring goals for Centre in the game were Sam Rush (Cornelius, N.C.) with two and Murphy, Harry Meisner (Wyoming, Ohio) and Patrick Vaughn (Signal Mountain, Tenn.) each with one. Clayton Brown (Louisville, Ky.) made 12 saves in goal for the Colonels.
The Colonels wrap up the regular season Sunday at Oglethorpe before returning to Birmingham next Friday for the SCAC Tournament.
