Last Second Shot Just Misses In Cyclone Loss

ANNVILLE, Pa. (March 7, 2012) – The Centenary College men's lacrosse team came within about a foot from tying the game on a last second shot against Lebanon Valley on Wednesday, but were unable to nail it home before falling to the Dutchmen 5-4.

After allowing a goal just under five minutes into the game, the Cyclones came out of an important timeout attacking as Cameron Gunn (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) found the back of the net off a Robert Nuzzolese (Woodbury, N.Y./Syosset) pass to even the game up 1-1.

About three minutes later however, the Dutchmen responded with a goal off a Cyclone turnover to take back the lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Cyclones responded back immediately in the second quarter as Joshua Caven (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) netted yet another equalizer off a pass from Gunn following a Dutchmen turnover.

Unfortunately the Dutchmen responded with another go-ahead goal only three short minutes later but were met with a Cyclone answer soon thereafter as Conor Nolan (Hillsborough, N.J./Immaculata) followed up a Steve Orsini (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) shot to tie the game back up at 3-3 entering the half.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Cyclones took their first lead of the game as Nuzzolese teamed up with Nolan to find the back of the net and take a 4-3 lead over the Dutchmen. Unfortunately for Centenary, the Dutchmen answered with two goals in less than 40 seconds to take back a 5-4 lead.

With only a minute left in the game and the Cyclones down a goal, junior defender Sean Lowe (Westminster, Md./Westminster) picked up a loose groundball off a Dutchmen turnover to move the ball into the attack zone.

With the clock winding down, the Cyclones were able to get off three consecutive shots, including a shot at the horn by Nolan off a side pass from Gunn looking to tie the game that went just wide, ending the Cyclones hopes of tying the game up.

With the loss, the Cyclones fall to 1-2 on the season but look to even their record up over spring break when they travel down to Jupiter, Fla. to take on Rensselear Polytechnic Institute at 11:00am next Tuesday.
