READING, Pa. (February 25, 2012) – The Cyclones offense was on full throttle in their season opener against Alvernia University on Saturday afternoon as they took down the Crusaders 10-3 for their first win of the season.
Centenary wasted no time against the Crusaders as they put four unanswered points up easily in the first quarter to take an early lead. With the one-man advantage in their favor, sophomore Steve Orsini (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) was able to find the back of the net off a Cameron Gunn (Johnson City, N.Y./Johnson City) pass to put the Cyclones ahead 1-0 with just over eight minutes left in the first quarter.
Less than three minutes later, junior Conor Nolan (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) found the net with the help of senior Jeff Prudente (Somerville, N.J./Somerville) to give the Cyclones a quick 2-0 lead.
With under a minute remaining in the first quarter, the Cyclones continued to attack as Gunn teamed up with freshman Joshua Caven (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) to knock home two Centenary goals in less than 50 seconds.
The second quarter proved to be the same outcome for the Cyclones as Gunn came out shooting, putting the Cyclones up with another goal only about two minutes into the quarter to put Centenary up 5-0.
Alvernia threatened with a goal of their own with just under ten minutes left, but the Cyclones responded right back with two more goals of their own to extend their lead to 7-1 at the end of the second period.
The Centenary offense and defense continued to work through the third period, scoring three more goals, but were shut down completely in the final period as Alvernia outscored them 2-0.
Leading the Cyclones in net was senior Kyle McVay (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) who made 11-12 saves in his 46:34 minutes in front of the goal. Leading the offense was Caven who finished the game with four goals and one assist as well as a 14-3 record in faceoffs.
With the win, the Cyclones improve to 1-0 on the season and look to continue their winning ways next Saturday when they travel to Richard Stockton to play at 1:00pm.
