Strong Second Half Lifts Royals Past Farmingdale St., 11-5, In Season Opener Saturday Afternoon

FARMINGDALE, NY—Junior attackers Taylor Nelson (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown East) and Kyle Frank (Glen Arm, Md./Boys' Latin) and senior midfielder Mike Rufo (Broomall, Pa./Haverford School) scored three goals apiece to lead The University of Scranton men's lacrosse team to a season-opening 11-5 victory over Farmingdale State Saturday afternoon.

Defensively, the Royals, now 1-0, held the Rams to just two goals in the second half to break away from a 4-3 halftime lead. 

Scranton, which trailed 3-1 after the first period, also received a goal apiece from senior midfielder Matt Glenn (Jamison, Pa./Central Bucks East) and junior midfielder Olaf Gilliam (Piermont, NY/Tappan Zee), three assists from John Gregitis (Wayne, Pa./St. Joseph's Preparatory), two from sophomore midfielder Matt Tibbetts (West Hartford, Conn./Conard), and one from sophomore midfielder Mike Deliberti (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe)

Junior goalkeeper Ben Worthington (Jenkintown, Pa./Archbishop Wood) made eight saves to pick up the victory.

Seniord midfielder Tim Caden (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) led the Rams, now 0-1, with two goals and two assists.

Farmingdale tied it early in the third period on an unassisted goal by Caden before Rufo keyed a 4-0 spurt with a goal off an assist by Gregitis and Gilliam, Frank, and Nelson followed with goals as the Royals took an 8-4 lead into the fourth period.  

Frank, playing in his first game for Scranton since 2009, now has 61 goals in his career, which is currently tied for 18th place on the Royals' all-time list.

Scranton, which has now won its last three season-opening games, will return to action next Saturday, March 3, against Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
