Greensboro Men's Lacrosse Beats Wesley, 12-10

The Greensboro College men's lacrosse team evened its record at 1-1 on the season with a 12-10 win at Wesley on Saturday.

The Pride jumped out to a 3-2 lead after the first period after falling behind 1-0.  Max Aiken evened the score at 1-1 with an unassisted goal at the 10:17 mark before Wyatt Clay gave Greensboro the lead with an unassisted score just over a minute later.  Braedan Leithead followed with 5:38 to go on an assist from Bill Blakely to extend the lead to 3-1.

The second period was all Pride, as Greensboro outscored Wesley 4-0, to take a 7-2 lead into the break.  Pearson netted the first goal with Blakely adding the second and third before Jaegar Carlyle closed out the scoring.

Wesley rallied in the early minutes of the second half with three unanswered goals to cut the margin to 7-5.  Thomas Brooks got The Pride back on track with 7:03 on the clock, scoring on an assist from Blakely.

The Wolverines responded with another 3-0 run to knot the game up at 8-8.  Blakely came through big again, though, for Greensboro with an unassisted goal with seven seconds left in the third to turn the momentum.

The Pride fed off Blakely's goal, starting out the fourth with scores by Justin Pearson and Blakely to push the advantage to 11-8.  After Wesley trimmed the score to 11-9, Blakely added his fifth and final goal of the day with 4:57 left in the match to give Greensboro all the breathing room it would need.

Blakely finished the day with five goals and two assists for seven points.  Pearson also added multiple goals with two.  Aiken led the team in ground balls on the day with ten while Skip Jakupi chipped in with nine.

As a team, Greensboro fired 38 shots compared to 36 for the Wolverines.  The Pride also grabbed 40 ground balls to Wesley's 28.  Greensboro made good on six of its eight clear attempts and was one of five on extra man opportunities.

Head Greensboro coach Dan Cetrone had this to say about the victory: "I thought we played well for three quarters.  Our goalie and face-off guys were solid and did not make a lot of mistakes.  It was very important win for our team."

The Pride will return to action on Saturday, February 25 as they host Virginia Wesleyan at 1 p.m. on Pride Field.
