SCRANTON, Pa.—The University of Scranton battled back from an early deficit only to drop a heart-breaking 3-2 decision to Moravian College in the quarterfinals of the Landmark Conference tournament Wednesday evening at the Long Center.
The Royals lost the first two sets, trailed 20-18 in the fourth and came back to pull out a 25-23 victory to force a fifth and deciding set. In the fifth set, Scranton fell behind 8-3 and 10-3 before storming back to take a 14-13 lead. The Lady Greyhounds then pulled out the victory by winning the next three points, which included a block assist and a kill by senior middle blocker Katie Moquette (Midland Park, NJ/Midland Park).
The win was the sixth straight and 10th in the last 12 matches for Moravian, now 22-11, while the Royals ended their season with a 17-16 mark. The Lady Greyhounds will now face top-seeded Juniata College this Saturday, November 5, in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, beginning at 11:00 a.m.
Junior right-side hitter Samantha Savite (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) led Moravian with 16 kills and six total blocks and freshman outside hitter Taylor Jennings (Cedar Run, NJ/Southern Regional) and junior outside hitter JeanAnne Carey (Bucks County, Pa./Pennsbury) combined for 21 kills. The Lady Greyhounds also received 29 digs from junior libero Jesse Krasley (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) and sophomore setter Kelly Brown (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) had 43 assists and 22 digs.
Freshman outside hitter Julia Crilly (Rochester, NY/Aquinas Institute) led the Royals with 22 kills and 22 digs, sophomore outside hitter Michaela McCrudden (Fort Washington, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy) had eight kills and 17 digs, and junior libero Marissa Every (East Norriton, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy) finished with 21 digs. The Royals, who hit .228 for the match, also received eight kills and 12 digs from sophomore outside hitter Katie Newman (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) and 31 assists from junior Juli Woods (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven).
Crilly's 'double-double' in kills and digs was her 11th of the season. Junior Jenell McFadden (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) recorded five kills to go over the 800 mark for her career.
Tonight's match was the final one for Royal seniors Aileena Flynn (LaPlata, Md./Bishop McNamara) and Kelly Zimmermann (Livingston, NJ/Livingston). Flynn played in 51 matches in her three-year career and finished with 119 digs, while Zimmermann ends her four-year career with 244 kills, 30 service aces, 113 digs and 107 total blocks in 98 career matches.
