SCRANTON, Pa.—Junior outside hitter Jenell McFadden (Springfield, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) made sure that Senior Night turned out something special for University of Scranton teammates Kelly Zimmermann (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) and Aileena Flynn (LaPlata, Md./Bishop McNamara) Friday evening at the Long Center.
McFadden finished with a season-high 20 kills and 10 digs as the Royals defeated Delaware Valley College, 3-1, in the nightcap. In the first match, Scranton received eight kills and five digs from sophomore outside hitter Michaela McCrudden) in a 3-0 victory over Bryn Athyn College.
With the wins, the Royals improved to 16-14 heading into tomorrow's regular-season finales against Lebanon Valley and Gallaudet at the Long Center at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., respectively.
McFadden got plenty of help in the win over Delaware Valley from freshman outside hitter Julia Crilly (Rochester, NY/Aquinas Institute), who finished with 19 kills and nine digs and junior setters Emily Keim (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and Juli Woods (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) combined for 48 of the Royals' 52 assists. As a team, Scranton hit a season-high .347.
Sophomore middle hitters Janel Gluch (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) and Destinee Horning (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Central) led the Aggies, now 20-6, with 13 kills apiece and freshman setter Crystal Ronan (Springfield, Va./Robert E. Lee) had 24 assists. Horning also finished with 10 digs.
Against Bryn Athyn, which fell to 8-11, freshman setter Jennifer Coco (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter Panas) had 12 assists and Zimmermann, Crilly, and freshman middle hitter Kristin Keegan (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) had five kills apiece.
Zimmermann and Flynn, the lone two seniors on the Royal roster, were honored prior to the start of the match against Delaware Valley. Zimmerman responded with a season-high eight kills and Flynn recorded four digs and an assist.
McFadden, who recorded her eighth 'double-double' of the season in kills and digs, moved into 15th place on the Royals' all-time list for most kills with 781.
