MEADVILLE, Pa. - Former Yankee great Yogi Berra said it best; "it was déjà vu all over again." Last week Allegheny hosted Hiram and dropped a five-set thriller for the ages. Wednesday night, the team looking across the net from them was the College of Wooster. Just like last week, the Gators would take two of the first three sets in thrilling fashion, only to drop the last two sets to fall 2-3(28-26, 19-25, 26-24, 30-32, 12-15).
The first set would be a thriller, as the teams traded the lead four times, while drawing even with each other on eight different occassions. Set number one would prove to be just a foreshadowing of what was yet to come as Allegheny would take the 1-0 lead with a 28-26 victory.
The Fighting Scots would take set number two 25-19, which would prove to be the largest margin of victory for either team all night. Set number three played out just as set one did, with both teams trading the lead with each other. Wooster would take a 24-22 lead going into set point; however, a kill from senior Audra Batdorff, and three consecutive attack errors would seal the victory for Allegheny (26-24), to put the Gators up 2-1.
That's when this NCAC match went from classic status to epic. Again both teams would fight tooth and nail for every point, with the lead going back and forth faster than the volleyball itself. The Fighting Scots looked to have a firm grasp when an Allegheny attack error put them up 24-21. However, the Gators would storm back, scoring the next three points to once again tie it at 24. Allegheny would have three opportunities to seal the victory, but Wooster would battle back and take the fourth set 32-30.
Once again for the Gators it would come down to the fifth and final set at home in front of a ruckus Wise Center crowd. As expected the final set was just as tightly played as the previous four. However, with the score tied at 12, the Fighting Scots would muster one final surge, taking the last three points and the match.
Batdorff and fellow senior Caitlin Rothman would combine for an astonishing 35 kills, sophomore setter Madie Hudac would continue her fantastic play by dishing out 42 assists, and senior Winnie Wong would rack up a very impressive 33 digs as Allegheny would fall to 8-16 overall, and 1-7 in NCAC play.
The Gators will have the next two days off as they prepare to take part in the final NCAC power weekend hosted by Wooster on Saturday, October 15 and Sunday, October 16.
