Lynchburg Holds Off Guilford, 3-2

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Aricquel Payne had a match-high 15 kills on .323 hitting, plus 14 digs and three blocks to help Lynchburg College to a 3-2 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) volleyball win over Guilford College Wednesday night. Elena Kritter added 14 putaways, 12 digs and two service aces for the Hornets (14-6), who improved to 6-1 in ODAC play.

Kritter had six kills in as many attempts as Lynchburg hit .481 with 17 kills in a 25-14 first-set win. The Hornets looks like they were in for a short night after a 25-17 victory in the second set, but the Quakers got five of Laura Kopald's seven kills in the third set and stayed alive with a 25-16 triumph.

Guilford (7-13, 3-4 ODAC) trailed 17-9 in the fourth set, but roared back to win 16 of the next 22 points and force a fifth set with a 25-23 triumph. The Quakers' comeback stalled in the fifth set, however as Guilford hit .048 with four errors in 21 attempts.

Moriah Sedlak added nine kills and Rebecca Loftis had eight for Lynchburg, which hit .205 as a team. Rachel Turk had 54 assists and eight digs, while Molly Deacon had 16 digs and a .972 serve receive percentage.

Senior Emma Gunn led Guilford with 13 kills on a match-high .458 hitting with two blocks. Malikah French chipped in with nine kills and four blocks. Mary Moody and Brittany DeCesare both had eight putaways. Taylor Whitley paced the Quakers with 34 assists and senior Taylor Phillips made a team-high 19 digs.

Guilford hosts Bridgewater College and Meredith College Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
