Monks make their way past UMF

FARMINGTON, Maine -- Saint Joseph's College of Maine held off the University of Maine at Farmington for a 3-0 victory (25-19, 25-22, 25-20) in non-conference women's volleyball action tonight at Dearborn Gymnasium.

The Beavers (3-6) are scheduled to open North Atlantic Conference play this weekend when they visit Colby-Sawyer College Friday at 7 p.m. and face Lyndon State College (1 p.m.) and Johnson State College (3 p.m.) on Saturday at Colby-Sawyer. The Monks ran their record to 9-3 and are scheduled to host Daniel Webster College Thursday at 7 p.m.

After St. Joe's notched the 25-19 win in the opening set, the Beavers led 17-16 in game two before falling 25-22. The Monks staved off an UMF rally in the third set to take the game 25-20 for the 3-0 final.

Sarah Hawkes (Pownal, Maine) paced St. Joe's with nine kills and 11 digs, while Kristin Palladino (Exeter, N.H.) added seven kills and Kiah Begley (Berwick, Maine) doled out 27 assists. The Monks amassed 11 total blocks, led by Hawkes and Holly Bannister (Cumberland, Maine) with three apiece.

Shannon Brown (Calais, Maine) and Shannon Mitchell (Portsmouth, N.H.) each collected five kills for UMF. Marina Tello (San Antonio, Texas) continued her solid play with 13 digs in the loss and Amanda Mullane (Melrose, Mass.) had three solo blocks.
