MEADVILLE, Pa. - A little home cooking is all Allegheny needed to jump start their season, as the Gators (3-6)swept the first two games of the 2011 Gator invitational; defeating Penn State-Behrend in a five set thriller 14-25, 25-19, 25-16, 21-25, 15-9 and sweeping Pitt-Greensburg 25-21, 25-21, 25-12.
The start of the day didn't go exactly as planned, as the Gators dropped a fast first set to Penn State-Behrend. However, that's when senior Audra Batdroff and Allegheny would turn it on as they stormed back to take a two sets to one lead. The fourth set was a back and forth affair as each team traded one point leads until a late rally by the Lions put them up for good 25-21. The fifth set was all Allegheny, as the Gators would win the first four points in the deciding game, never allowing Penn State-Behrend to get within four.
Batdroff would end the first match with a team high 19 kills and 8 digs. Senior Caitlin Rothman and sophomore Saige Foster both added nine kills. With their first home win in the books, Allegheny quickly turned its attention to their next opponent, Pitt-Greensburg.
After playing a grueling five set match, the Gators decided that their second game of the day would not take nearly as long, as the romped the Bobcats of Pitt-Greensburg in straight sets.
The first two sets of the match were very competitive, each ending in a 25-21 score. However, Allegheny would dominate the third set from start to finish. Jumping out to a 14-5 lead, and at one point holding a 14 point edge on the Bobcats.
Sophomore Saige Foster added to her solid performance from the first match, amassing 10 kills and 2 blocks, while senior Winnie Wong led the team with 12 digs as Allegheny would record back-to-back wins for the first time this season.
The Gator Invitational will continue tomorrow, as Allegheny will take on Grove City at 10:00 am and they will wrap up the tournament with when they battle Frostburg State at 2:00 pm.
