Yellowjackets Outlast Lakeland

The Yellowjacket volleyball team took their unbeaten record back on the road, taking part in the 2011 Pizza Hut Classic, hosted by WIAC rival UW-Oshkosh.  The Yellowjackets, who enter the tournament 4-0, are in the midst of one of the best starts in school history.

Friday's action saw the Yellowjackets taking on Lakeland College out of Sheboygan, Wis. in the first match, followed by a nightcap against the University of Chicago.

In the first match, the Yellowjackets took the first set by a score of 25-21 before falling behind and dropping the next two 17-25 and 22-25.  The Yellowjackets rallied for the second time in their last three matches, however, winning the fourth set 25-16 to even the match.  In the fifth and final set, the Yellowjackets pulled it out by the slimmest of margins, winning 15-13 to take the match and preserve their perfect record.

After expending a great deal of energy to rally for a win in the first match, the Yellowjackets didn't have much time to rest and were swept in the second match, falling 3-0 to the University of Chicago by scores of 13-25, 14-25, 17-25.

Despite the loss, the Yellowjackets stand at 5-1 on the year, the best record to start the season since 1995, when they also opened 5-1.

The Yellowjackets (5-1, 0-0 WIAC) return to the Kolf Sports Center in Oshkosh on Saturday, September 10 for day two of the Pizza Hut Classic.  In the first match of the day, they will take on Lawrence University out of Appleton, Wis.  Match time is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.  The second match of the day will be at 1:00 p.m. against an opponent to be determined.  Complete statistics and a full recap will be available at the conclusion of the tournament.
