Volleyball opens 2011 season with a sweep

The Colonels wasted little time getting into the win column, defeating Lasell in three games 25-8, 25-10, 25-23.

Sophomore Catherine Janszen (Cincinnati, Ohio) paced Centre with 14 kills and eight digs. Senior Laura Hench (Lexington, Ky.) had 11 digs and a service ace. Senior Stephanie Woeste (Louisville, Ky.) tallied six kills and three blocks and freshman Suzanne Asbury (Louisville, Ky.) added seven kills and five blocks in her first collegiate match.

The Colonels came back in match two and defeated Pomona-Pitzer in four games. After winning games one and two 25-22 and 25-21, Pomona-Pitzer won game three 25-20, but fell 25-21 in game four to lose the match.

Janszen led the team in kills again, this time finishing with 21 kills. Woeste recorded nine kills, six blocks and one ace. Senior Hannah Greer (Owensboro, Ky.) had 38 assists. Hench added 20 digs and junior Jenna Foushee (Louisville, Ky.) posted 14 digs in the victory.

The Colonels (2-0) will be back in action Saturday, Sept. 3 for day two of the tournament. Centre will first play Augsburg College at 10 a.m. PST and then cap the weekend with a match against Chapman University at 2:30 p.m. PST.
