Miller and Latranyi Lead Saxons With Four Goals Each in Win at Hilbert

HAMBURG, NY – The Alfred University women's lacrosse team was at Hilbert College on Thursday afternoon for a matchup with the Hawks. The Saxons (1-3, 0-0 Empire 8) came out with a hard fought victory by a score of 13-12.

Five different Saxons got in on the scoring action as Madison Latranyi (Danville, PA/Danville Area) recorded four points and Taylor Miller (Medina, NY/Medina) finished with five points to lead AU to its first win on the season.

Latranyi scored four goals for the Saxons and picked up a team high seven ground balls while Miller finished with four goals and an assist.

Julia Myszkiewicz (Buffalo, NY/Amherst) scored twice and assisted on another goal.

Sarah Turner (Bentonville, AR/Bentonville) finished with two goals while MacKenzie McWilliams (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown) scored once.

Paige Rowlee (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley)played all 60 minutes in goal and had an impressive 19 saves.

Miller was the first Saxon on the board with a goal just three minutes into the game. Turner and Latranyi followed suit not long after and gave AU an early 3-0 advantage.

Hilbert broke through with 23:41 on the clock in the first half but less than a minute later, Myszkiewicz responded for Alfred with her first goal of the game to make it 4-1.

The Hawks made it 4-3 with consecutive goals from Aaryonah Vaughn but before Myszkiewicz answered once again with an unassisted goal.

Latranyi tacked on two more goals within a minute, just under the halfway point of the first half to pad the Saxon lead.

McWilliams netted a free position goal at the 9:20 mark, just before Turner scored her second of the game to give Alfred a 9-4 advantage at halftime.

After Lantranyi scored her fourth goal of the game early in the second half to make it 10-3, scoring became more difficult for the Saxons as the momentum began to swing the way of the Hawks.

Hilbert scored four unanswered from that point to pull within just two goals with 14:27 left to play.

Miller took over for AU from there, scoring three of her four goals within a six minute span late in the second half to give the Saxons a 13-10 lead and some insurance that proved to be important.

Hilbert scored with just over six minutes to play then again at the 1:51 mark to make it 13-12.

A late draw control won by Alfred gave the Saxons the upper hand late but the Hawks were able regain possession.

A late shot to tie the game went wide for Hilbert and sent the Saxons to their first victory of the 2019 season.

"Today the lacrosse god's smiles upon us. We went into the game wanting to win ground balls and communication and we came out with that and more," Head Coach Erin McGaffigan said. "Wins are rewards for blood, sweat and tears. Today was a great day of working hard for the person to our left and our right, and pushing through the aches and pains. This program is hungry and today was a great taste of the future. We're excited to ride this momentum into conference play."

AU will look to build on this win on Saturday as they open up Empire 8 play against The Sage Colleges at home with that one set to begin at 2PM.
