Bison split DH at Mitchell

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Nichols College softball team split its non-conference doubleheader with Mitchell College Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Game One – Mitchell 5, Nichols 0
Senior Kendall Meehan and sophomore Cara Mayhew each had a hit for the Bison. Sophomore Alexis Ferris surrendered eight hits and five runs in 4.2 innings in defeat. She walked three and struck out three.
Seniors Megan Elphick and Italia Krick each had a two-run double for the Mariners. In the circle, freshman Shyla Phillips-Krick tossed seven shutout innings, walking two and striking out six.
Game Two – Nichols 8, Mitchell 7
Junior Jessica Kuelling had three hits and a pair of RBI while Mayhew also recorded two hits and two RBI as the Bison rallied from a 5-2 deficit to defeat the Mariners. Meehan, meanwhile, had two doubles and moved into a tie for the program lead with Chelsea Correia (2009-12) with 38.
Trailing by three runs entering the fifth, the Bison (14-17-1) put up a 'four' spot to grab a 6-5 lead. Meehan plated the first run of the inning with a double to center, followed by an RBI singles from Mayhew and Kuelling. Freshman Colleen Callahan was then plunked with the bases loaded to bring in sophomore Taylor Commesso with the fourth run of the frame.
In the sixth, RBI singles from Mayhew and Kuelling extended the lead to 8-5. The Mariners (12-18) got two back in their half of the frame and had the tying run on second base with one down in the seventh before the game was called due to darkness.
Freshman Jessica Soucie picked up the win for Nichols as she went 5.2 innings, allowing nine hits and seven runs (four earned) with three walks and one strikeout.
Freshman Laurissa Amaker hit a solo home run for Mitchell in the third inning.
All-Time Series
Today's games marked the second and third all-time meeting between Nichols College and Mitchell College and first since 2012. Nichols leads the series, 2-1.
