Carr Diamond, Boston, Mass.

BOSTON, Mass. --  Freshmen Jill Skalski (Cranford, N.J.) and Shelby Nolan (Ansonia, Conn.) each rapped out a pair of hits and drove in two runs to lead Mount Ida to an 11-2 five inning victory over Wentworth in the opening game of a non-league college softball doubleheader played Tuesday afternoon at Carr Diamond.  The nightcap saw freshman Kayla DeMedeiros (South Dartmouth, Mass.) toss a complete-game seven-hit shutout and help her own cause with three hits and two RBI as the host Leopards gained a split with a 4-0 triumph.

After the teams traded first inning runs in the lid-lifter, the visiting Mustangs (12-15) capitalized on a pair of errors, a passed ball and Nolan's RBI double to take a 5-1 advantage in the top of the fourth, and after Wentworth (9-18) got a run back in the bottom of the frame on senior Rachel Willcutt's (Tilton, N.H.) run-scoring single, Mount Ida iced its opening triumph with a six-run fifth inning rally that was sparked by Skalski's two-run homer (her first collegiate round-tripper).  Nolan and freshman Caitlin Hogan (Derry, N.H.) followed with RBI singles to extend the Mustangs' lead to 9-2, and a two-run error closed out the frame for the visitors, who claimed their sixth straight win with the result.

Skalski, Nolan and junior Kristina Stella (Revere, Mass.) each had two hits as part of a nine-hit attack in the win for Mount Ida, as freshman Carrigan Costello (Wolcott, Conn.) collected her fourth victory in her last five decisions (and fifth overall) by fanning one over the first four frames for the Mustangs.  Sophomore Deanna DiPilato (Worcester, Mass.) accounted for the other Leopard run of the opener with a first inning RBI single, as freshman Brionna Myers (Seabrook, N.H.) allowed five earned runs and struck out three to suffer the setback inside the circle for the hosts.

DeMedeiros provided the only run Wentworth would need in the nightcap with a first inning RBI single, as the Leopards closed out the scoring in the third on back-to-back run scoring doubles from DiPilato and DeMedeiros that were followed by Myers's RBI single.  DeMedeiros, who fanned eight in recording her seventh triumph of the spring inside the circle for the hosts, collected three of Wentworth's 11 second game hits, as the Leopards also received two hits each off the bats of Willcutt, senior Vanessa Weymouth (Fremont, N.H.) and junior Caroline Shea (Abington, Mass.).  Hogan and Skalski each had two hits as part of a seven-hit attack in the second game setback for Mount Ida, as freshman Savannah Neilan (Somerset, Mass.) allowed two earned runs and struck out five over the first three frames for the Mustangs.

Mount Ida hosts Lasell in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader on Thursday afternoon at the Mount Ida Softball Field that begins at 3:00 p.m., while Wentworth entertains Salve Regina in a Commonwealth Coast Conference twinbill on Thursday afternoon at Carr Diamond beginning at 4:00 p.m.
