Sarah Ikioka and Elizabeth Johnson Secure Spot in Semifinals of NCAA Division III Doubles Championships with Comeback Win

The excitement of the NCAA Division III Individual Tennis Championships continued on Friday in Chattanooga, TN, with the University of Redlands' top duo of sophomore Elizabeth Johnson (Portland, OR) and freshman Sarah Ikioka (Wailuku, HI) capturing another comeback win to advance to Saturday's semifinal.

While taking on the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater's Megan Humphreys and Bridgid McGuire on Friday afternoon, the talented Bulldogs battled through a tight opening set that ultimately went to a tiebreak.  Amidst quality points and aggressive net play, Humphreys and McGuire snagged the 7-6 victory.

Nonetheless, Johnson and Ikioka quickly regrouped in the second set and ultimately evened the count at one set all with their 6-4 showing.

After jumping out to a 2-0 lead, the persistent pair relied on grit to finish critical points throughout the deciding set.  With a spot in the semifinal on the line, Ikioka and Johnson kept up their assertive style at the net to close out the win by a score of 6-2.

Redlands is joined in tomorrow's semifinal action by fellow Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) member, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, as Lindsay Brown and Nicole Tan earned a 6-3, 7-6 victory on Friday.

Johnson and Ikioka now face the top-seeded team of Eudice Chong and Victoria Yu of Wesleyan University (CT) on Saturday at approximately 8:30 a.m. PT at the Champions Tennis Club.
