The 11th-ranked Hope College volleyball team rallied for a five-set win at Adrian on Tuesday that clinched a top-two seed for next week's Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament.
The Flying Dutch emerged victorious 23-25, 25-19, 22-25, 25-12, 15-11 for their second five-set over the Bulldogs this season.
Hope (22-4 overall) improved to 12-2 in league matches. The Flying Dutch trail first-place and unbeaten Calvin by two games with two matches remaining, including Friday's 6:30 p.m. rivalry rematch in Grand Rapids.
Against Adrian, Hope reclaimed control of the match in the fourth set by taking nine of 10 points to take a 16-8 lead and forcing a fifth set.
In the final set, the Flying Dutch never trailed but surged ahead 12-4 by scoring eight of nine points over a decisive stretch.
Sophomore outside hitter Katie Rietberg of Holland, Michigan (West Ottawa) topped Hope with a match-high 16 kills.
Outside hitter Vanessa Reynhout recorded Hope with a career-high 15 kills. The sophomore from Freeport, Michigan (Lakewood HS) hit a .448 clip.
Senior middle hitter Courtney Van Houzen of Traverse City, Michigan (West) chipped in 14 kills.
Junior setter Sophia Hackett of Indianapolis, Indiana (Brebeuf Jesuit) totaled 55 assists — her second-highest total of the season.
Senior libero Alexis Thompson of Monroe, Michigan (St. Mary Catholic Central) had a team-high 31 digs.
