Women's Soccer Tops Adrian With Three First-Half Goals

Two Allie Wittenbach goals got the Hope College women's soccer team off on the right foot Saturday at Adrian, and the Flying Dutch marched to their first Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association victory.

The Flying Dutch won 3-1 to raise their record to 2-0-1 overall and 1-0-1 in MIAA play.

Wittenbach struck twice with unassisted goals in the first 24 minutes, 27 seconds. The junior from Ada, Michigan (Forest Hills Central HS) buried her first goal of the season after the ball caromed off the Adrian goalie following a corner kick in the 11th minute.

Wittenbach made the lead 2-0 in the 25th minute.

Adrian cut Hope's lead to 2-1 three minutes after Wittenbach's second goal, but senior Elizabeth Perkins of Eaton Rapids, Michigan (Lansing Christian) answered in the 31st minute to continue their goalscoring tear.

Perkins has scored in each match so far this season — a total of five goals. Perkins already has matched her goal total from last season.

Perkins has 19 career goals — tying her for 14th place all-time with Erin Jipping (2011-14).

Junior goalie Mary Clare Theis of East Lansing, Michigan (Haslett) made four saves against Adrian (2-2-1, 0-1-1).

The match completed a stretch of four road games to start the season for Hope. The Flying Dutch return to action on Monday, Sept. 12 at 6:30 p.m. with their home opener against Trine at Van Andel Soccer Stadium.
