Volleyball falls in four to Blazers

St. Thomas Volleyball opened its home season and MIAC season Wednesday night in Schoenecker Arena but watched the visiting St. Ben's Blazers storm to a 3-1 victory. St. Ben's won 25-18, 25-14, 20-25, 25-9.

The Tommies (3-6 overall, 0-1 MIAC) hit just .154 to a .232 clip by the Blazers (5-4, 1-0). St. Ben's reeled off 15 service aces and got a double-double from Laura Schmitt with 17 kills and 14 digs.

Whitney Lloyd had 11 kills and Rebecca Hawkins added nine kills and 13 digs for UST. Jennifer Wild recorded 22 digs and Katharine Mallak added 32 assists.

St. Thomas travles to Rock Island, Ill., and plays Friday night mtches against Augustana (Ill.) and Beloit (Wis.).
