After Early Lead, Mustangs Bow Out to Nighthawks

BROOKLINE, Mass. – The Mount Ida women's volleyball team grabbed the upper hand in their non-conference match with Newbury, but saw the Nighthawks claim a 3-1 victory on Tuesday evening at Hellenic College.

The Mustangs slipped past Newbury 26-24 in a tight first set, but fell by scores of 25-11, 25-20, and 26-24 to see their record slip below the .500 mark for the season (3-4). Newbury got themselves level in the win-loss column, and are now 3-3 on the year.

Freshman Mary Kate Reidy (Agawam, Mass.) led the Mustangs with 9 kills and had ten digs and a block assist in the game, while first year outside hitters Lina Miranda (Brockton, Mass.) and Maya Umoren (Quincy, Mass.) powered the Nighthawks to victory, registering  11 and six kills, respectively.

Mount Ida came out of the gate strong, winning the first set, 26-24. First year opposite hitter Shayna Vallauri (Morris Plains, N.J.) was red hot from the outside hitting .429 with three kills while fellow Reidy kept pace with three kills on eight attempts to give the Mustangs the 1-0 match lead.

Vallauri would finish the match with eight kills, while sophomore Molly Alkinburg (Port Deposit, Md.) added six kills in the match.

Sophomore middle hitter Kylie Kowalski (Wrightstown, N.J.) dominated the middle, registering two blocks – one solo and one assisted – in the second set to lead Newbury to the 25-11 win to even up the match.

In the third set, Miranda came alive registering four kills on eight attempts with one service ace to lead the Nighthawks to take the third set, 25-20.

Umoren was nearly perfect from the floor in the fourth match, registering a set-high four kills on six attempts for a .667 hitting percentage. Along with her six kills and .312 attack percentage, Umoren finished the night tying Kowalski with a team-high four total blocks – one solo and three block assists.

Junior Kelcey Koolman (Bedford, N.H.) had 13 digs in the game for Mount Ida, and junior Nicole Peixoto (New Bedford, Mass.) racked up 29 assists and served three aces.

The Mustangs will be back in action this weekend in Standish, Maine against Lesley University and Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) foe Saint Joseph's (Me.) at 12:00 p.m. 

The Nighthawks return to the hard-court on Thursday September 11th when they travel to Paxton, Mass. for a 7:00 p.m. tilt against non-conference Anna Maria College.
