Palazzini Helps RIC Split at Southern Maine Tri-Match

Gorham, Maine- Sophomore right side hitter Lauren Palazzini (Woonsocket, RI) racked up 20 kills to go along with 13 digs and 12 service aces to help the Rhode Island College women's volleyball team split a tri-match, hosted by Southern Maine on Saturday at Hill Gym.


Rhode Island College (3-24, 0-5 LEC) fell to Southern Maine, 3-0, in the first match of the day, before bouncing back to knock off Maine-Presque Isle, 3-0, in its second match of the afternoon.


RIC battled Southern Maine (20-8, 1-4 LEC) to close games in both the first (25-20) and second sets (25-21) to open the action on Saturday. The Huskies battled back to dominate the visitors (25-9) in the deciding frame. Palazzini paced the visitors with seven kills, eight digs and two aces. Senior middle hitter Amanda Cabral (Riverside, RI) posted six kills and two blocks, while sophomore outside hitter Michelle Malboeuf (Cumberland, RI) registered four kills and five digs. Sophomore setter Emma Cajthaml (El Cajon, CA) handed out 16 assists and freshman libero Nicole Thibodeau (Loxahatchee, FL) recorded a team-high nine digs.


USM freshman outside hitter Kristina Rubico (Chelmsford, MA) was dominant with 17 kills and 11 digs. Freshman outside hitter Amanda Keppel (Springfield, PA) and sophomore libero Demi Ruder (Clifton, CO) contributed 16 and 15 digs, respectively. Freshman setter Megan Nilson (Granby, CT) dished out 28 assists.


The Anchorwomen responded to the loss against the Huskies by topping Maine-Presque Isle, 3-0, to close out the day. After RIC fended off the Owls in the first set (27-25), the Anchorwomen stormed past UMPI (0-14) in the second set (25-14) and in the third set (25-16) to finish off the Owls. Palazzini chalked up a whopping 10 service aces in the win to go along with 13 kills and five digs, while Cabral and Malboeuf each chipped in with six kills. Cajthaml handed out 24 assists and added seven digs, while Thibodeau corralled nine digs.


Sophomore middle hitter Shannon Brown led the Owls with eight kills and nine digs.


Cabral, who finished with 12 kills, three blocks, two digs and two aces, aided Palazzini's outstanding efforts. Malboeuf totaled 10 kills and three blocks, while Cajthaml compiled 40 assists and 11 digs. Thibodeau finished with 18 digs on the day.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue Little East Conference action at home against Western Connecticut on Tuesday, Oct. 29 (7 p.m.).
