Vohnoutka Gets 1,000th Kill In Invite Sweep

WAVERLY, IOWA (9/10/11)—No.15-ranked Concordia breezed through the Wartburg Invitational, losing only one game the entire weekend, and won the team championship with a perfect 4-0 record.

The biggest news of the weekend came from the play of senior Katie Vohnoutka who had 36 kills in the four matches and became the 11th player in Cobber volleyball history to surpass the 1,000-kill mark. Vohnoutka now has 1,001 career kills. She reached her milestone in the team's final match of the tournament against Wartburg. Vohnoutka is the second CC player this year to reach the historic plateau. Fellow senior Jenna Green achieved the 1,000-kill mark last weekend at the UW-Eau Claire Invitational.

The Cobbers opened the tournament by sweeping both matches on Friday. CC beat Nebraska Wesleyan 25-17, 25-17, 25-16 and then breezed past Knox (Ill.) 25-11, 25-17, 25-8. On Saturday they dropped their only game of the tourney beating conference rival St. Olaf 25-17, 22-25, 25-20, 25-18 before finishing off the weekend by blanking host Wartburg 25-16, 28-26, 25-22.

Concordia has won six straight matches and is now 8-1 on the year. It is the best start to a year since the 2006 season when they went 25-1 in their first 26 matches.

Green led the Cobber front line attack the entire weekend. She was named the Tournament MVP after coming away with 51 kills, 44 digs and eight blocks. Vohnoutka also received post-tournament honors. She was named to the All-Tournament Team for the second straight weekend as she recorded 36 kills and had five blocks.

Amy Sykora continues to put the ball in the right spot for the CC offense. She had 125 assists in the four matches and now has 2,200 assists for her career. She also had a team-high eight service aces on the weekend. Sophomore Rachel Wiinanen led the Cobber defense with 45 digs in the four matches. She was also third on the team in total attacks for the weekend. Alison Bruggeman was the third member of the team with 40-plus digs in the tournament. She had 42 digs and five blocks.

Concordia will now turn its attention to conference play. The Cobbers begin the quest for their second MIAC title when they host Hamline on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. in the Olson Forum. CC will then travel to Colorado to play in the powerful Colorado College Invitational where four of the five teams at the tournament are ranked in the top 15 of the country.
