MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/13/11)—No.15-ranked Concordia made quick work of Hamline in the conference opener on Tuesday in Moorhead. The Cobbers dispatched the young Pipers 25-13, 25-16, 25-15 in a match that lasted exactly one hour.
The win is the seventh straight for Concordia and CC ups their overall record to 9-1. The Cobbers have also won four straight MIAC matches in a streak that dates back to the end of the 2010 season. Hamline is now 5-5 in 2011.
The Cobber frontline overwhelmed Hamline, which features a roster of 11 freshmen, from the very first point. Concordia was able to come up with consistent runs and never allowed the Pipers to get on a roll to grab any momentum. With the score tied 5-5 in the first set, CC went on a 5-0 run and then won 13 of the next 16 points. That run put the set out of reach and Concordia was able to take a 25-13 win.
Concordia put the second set out of reach in the very first nine points. The Cobbers opened the set by winning the first six points and then took an 8-1 lead. The Pipers crept to within four points at 9-5 but then CC won six of the next seven points to regain the momentum which led to a 25-16 win. The third set started out as the closest of the match but then Concordia once again used a run in the middle to seal the overall victory.
Jenna Green and Katie Vohnoutka were the only Cobber players with more than five kills in the match. Green led the team with a match-high 12 kills to go along with 14 digs. Vohnoutka had 11 kills and two blocks. Amy Sykora needed only 15 assists to help CC to the win. Rachel Wiinanen added 10 digs in the victory.
Hamline was led by Frankie Miller who had eight kills. Lacy Koss had a match-high 16 digs and Sammie Miller chipped in 12 assists.
The Cobber defense limited Hamline to an attack percentage of .048. HU only had one set where they hit above .000. On the other side of the court, the CC offense hit above .240 in all three sets and finished the match with an attack percentage of .268.
Concordia will now turn its attention to the national stage. The Cobbers will travel to Colorado to play in the Colorado College Invitational over the weekend. Of the four teams that CC will play in the tourney, three are ranked in the top 12 of the country and Wash. U. from St. Louis is currently the No.2 in all of DIII.
