ARDEN HILLS, Minn. (9/21/11)-- No.10-ranked Concordia lost to Bethel 3-2 (25-22,21-25,9-25,25-19,15-12) in the first conference road match of the season.
The Cobbers dropped the first set 25-22 after the score was tied at 22-22. CC then took out their frustrations in the second and third sets. Concordia won five of the last six points in set No.2 to win 25-21 and then cruised to a 25-9 win in the third set. The Cobbers rattled off 21 of the final 27 points in that set and appeared to be on their way to the conference victory. The Royals then regrouped in the fourth set and got out to a 13-6 lead and then opened up a 20-10 edge before winning 25-19. In the fifth, and deciding, set, Bethel started with a 4-1 lead but then CC rallied to tie the set at 4-4. From there, the two teams were never separated by two points until the final five points of the match. With the score at 13-10 in favor of the Royals, Concordia got a pair of kills from Katie Vohnoutka and Jenna Green to get to within one at 13-12 but then Bethel came up with the two biggest points of the match and won 15-12.
Concordia finished with a .163 attacking percentage. The Cobbers hit at least .140 in four of the five sets. CC was led by Vohnoutka and Green. Vohnoutka had 22 kills to go with six blocks and 13 digs. Green finished with 17 kills and 21 digs. Amy Sykora had a season-high 49 assists.
Bethel hit .149 for the entire match but came away with a match-high .306 attack percentage in the critical fifth set. BU had three players with at least 10 kills. Nicole Wriedt had a team-high 18 kills while Caitie Helle had 13 winners and Amy Werner added 11.
