A Very Special Senior Celebration Night

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/26/11)—It's been a very scary month of October for Concordia's opponents. The Cobbers continued their month-long domination as they swept Augsburg 25-18, 25-18, 25-14 on Senior Celebration Night. Concordia has now won 30 consecutive sets which breaks the MIAC record for most consecutive sets won. CC has not lost a set since Sept. 21 and is now 21-3 overall and 9-1 in the MIAC.  All nine of Concordia's conference wins have been by 3-0 sweeps.

The match on Wednesday's critical moment came in the very first set after the first 28 points had been played. With the score tied 14-14 and both teams playing well on offense, and defense, Concordia seized control of the match by going on a 7-0 run to suck the life out of the Auggie's upset threat. Augsburg went from a confident and up-beat team that had played the first half of the opening set with lots of energy to a team that was struggling to keep up with the Cobber frontline attack. From the point where the set was tied at 14-14, CC would go on to win 11 of the final 15 points in the opener. All told after the score was tied, Concordia held a 61-36 advantage in total points in the final two-and-a-half sets.

The Cobber defense had one of their best matches of the year as they held Augsburg to a .031 attack percentage for the match. CC came up with 66 digs in the three sets which is the second most during their current 10-match win streak. Concordia also came recorded 8.0 blocks in the match which ties a season high.

Concordia hit only .184 for the three sets. The Cobbers were once again carried by Ashley Beseman, Jenna Green, Amy Sykora and Katie Vohnoutka. The four super seniors shined the brightest on their special night. They have led by example the entire season and that was case on Senior Night. Green and Vohnoutka combined for 25 kills in the match which was only two short of Augsburg's total for the entire team. Green had a match-high 13 kills to go along with 21 digs while Vohnoutka had 12 winners and a match-high four blocks. Beseman continues to give CC another tough option at the net. She had a match-high .400 attack percentage and came away with three blocks. Sykora, the quarterback of the offense, had 28 assists and consistently put the Auggies on their heels with her service game. She had two service aces in the match.

The Cobber underclassmen were the understudies for the night but turned in some solid performances. Sophomore Allison Bruggeman had five kills and 18 digs while Danelle Loomis had nine digs and a match-high three service aces.

Augsburg (14-10/6-4 MIAC) had a pair of players with six kills on the night. Colleen Ourada had six kills, seven digs and four blocks. Nikolene Miller also had six kills. Katelyn Barnes added a match-high 24 digs and Emily McCourt had 24 assists and seven digs.

Concordia will now play for the MIAC regular-season championship. The Cobbers travel to St. Joseph to square off against St. Ben's on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 3 p.m. If CC can come away with a win, the will clinch at least a share of the conference regular-season crown and the No.1 seed in the upcoming MIAC playoffs.
