Cobbers Take Out Frustrations On Wildcats

MOORHEAD, Minn.  (9/24/11)—Concordia took out its frustration from Wednesday's loss at Bethel against St. Catherine on Saturday. The No.10-ranked Cobbers steamrolled the Wildcats 25-8, 25-21, 25-15 as they got returned to their winning ways in 2011.

Concordia (13-3/2-1 MIAC) wasted little time in seizing control of the match. CC bolted to a 15-3 lead in the first set and then cruised to a 25-8 win. The Cobbers hit .375 in the opener and held St. Kate's to a meager -.103. attack percentage.

The second set was the closest of the three. It looked like it would be a repeat of the first set when Concordia grabbed an 11-5 lead. The Wildcats' offense finally got on track and won eight of the next 13 points to get to within 16-13. The two teams would trade points from that point forward with CC never allowing St. Kate's to get within three points and closed out the set at 25-21.

Concordia trailed for the first time in the match in the third set. CC fell behind 6-5 but then went on a 9-2 match-deciding run that allowed the Cobbers to close out the match with a 25-15 win.

Concordia hit .323 for the match – the fifth time all year that the Cobbers have hit above the .300 mark in a match. The CC defense held St. Kate's to a .019 attack percentage which is the eighth time this year they have held an opponent under .100 for the entire match.

The Cobbers had a pair of players with double-digit kill totals. Jenna Green had 16 kills and 10 digs to record her fifth straight double-double and the 13th time this season she has had at least 10 kills and 10 digs in a match. Katie Vohnoutka had 13 winners and has now had at least 10 kills in 11 of the team's 16 matches. Ashley Beseman had three blocks and six kills and Amy Sykora chipped in 36 assists and 10 digs. For Sykora it was the fifth time in 2011 that she has posted at least 10 assists and 10 digs in a match.

St. Catherine (12-3/1-2 MIAC) did not have a player with more than six kills in the game. Kayla Sis had a team-high six kills and Callie Tiegen came away with 13 digs.

The Cobbers will now have a top 20 showdown with conference rival St. Thomas on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. in Memorial Auditorium.
