A Record, A Milestone And A Playoff Berth

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/21/11)—A record was broken, a milestone was reached and a playoff berth clinched in Concordia's 25-18, 27-25, 25-18 sweep over Gustavus on Friday.

The No.9-ranked Cobbers set a new school record for most consecutive set wins, won their 20th match of the year and clinched their 11th straight MIAC playoff berth with the victory over the Gusties. With the sweep, CC has now won 24 straight sets which eclipses the old mark of 22 set back in 1988. The win is also the eighth straight for Concordia and pushes their overall record to 20-3. The Cobbers have now won at least 20 matches in eight of the last 10 seasons. Finally, CC is now 7-1 in conference play and is tied for first place in the league standings.

The most drama in the match came in the second set. After Concordia had posted a 25-18 win in the opening set, the two teams went back and forth the entire middle set. The biggest lead in the second set was five points when the Cobbers took an 18-13 lead. Gustavus rallied to win eight of the next 11 points and tie the set at 21-21. For the next eight points, CC would gain a one-point lead and the watch as Gustavus rebounded to tie the match. Concordia had a pair of match points before finally winning the pivotal second contest. The Cobbers went ahead 26-2 on a kill from Jenna Green and then Green finished off the set with a kill on the very next point. The two Green kills preserved the consecutive set win streak and also took the winds out of the Gusties sails.

The Cobbers used a 5-1 run midway through the final set to pull away and post the 25-17 win.

Concordia had one more kill, one more dig and one more assist than Gustavus in the match. CC came away with 34 winners on the night as compared to 33 for GAC . The Cobbers had 63 digs as opposed to 62 for the Gusties and recorded 33 assists to 32 for Gustavus. The biggest stat difference came in blocks. Concordia finished with 6.0 team blocks while the Gusties had 3.0.

Green led all Concordia players with 12 blocks. She also had 11 digs. Katie Vohnoutka and Ashley Beseman had seven kills each. Vohnoutka also had a match-high three blocks. Rachel Wiinanen had a team-high 18 digs while Alison Bruggeman added 12. Amy Sykora led the Cobber offense and finished with 27 assists.

Gustavus (18-8/5-3) was led by Olivia Warren who had 12 kills. Warren also added 15 digs. Angela Ahrendt chipped in eight winners while Malea Noenning had 28 assists and 10 digs. Paige Breneman came up with a match-high 21 digs.    

The Cobbers will have less than 24 hours before their next match. Concordia will put their win streak on the line when they host Carleton on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 3 p.m.
