WINONA, Minn. (10/08/11)-- No.10-ranked Concordia made sure there would be no MIAC road trip weekend hangover as they swept St. Mary's 25-15, 25-23, 25-14 on Saturday to complete the two match sweep on the weekend. The Cobbers cruised past St. Olaf 25-21, 25-16, 25-19 on Friday night.
Concordia has now won four straight matches and all have been by identical 3-0 scores. The Cobbers have posted sweeps in their last nine wins of the year. CC is 16-3 in overall games on the season. They are also 5-1 in conference play with all five league wins being decided by 3-0 sweeps. CC is currently tied for lead in the conference standings with three other schools.
The two wins over the weekend had the same story line. The Cobber front line players overpowered the defense and Concordia's back court players did an outsanding job digging out would-be kill attempts and making clean passes to CC senior setter Amy Sykora. Sykora finished the two-match weekend with 66 assists. She now has 635 on the season and 2,710 for her career. She is now less than 330 from moving into second place on the school's all-time assist list.
Once again the senior All-American tandem of Jenna Green and Katie Vohnoutka led the way for the CC offense. Green had match-high kill totals in both matches. She had 15 kills and accounted for 8.5 points against St. Olaf and then put up 12 kills and record 13.5 points vs. St. Mary's on Saturday. Green now has a team-leading 258 kills for the year and 1,217 kills for her career. Vohnoutka posted four kills and had nine points at St. Olaf but then rebounded to come away with 10 kills and 13.5 points against the Cardinals. She also had 14 total blocks on the weekend and now has 264 for her career. Vohnoutka recently climbed into the school's all-time top 10 block list.
Fellow senior Ashley Beseman has been one of the forces behind Concordia's recent string of domination. Beseman has given CC a legitimate third attack option at the net and has put down critical kills in every match. She had her best match of the weekend on Friday when she came up with seven kills and 11.0 points against the Oles. Beseman also was a wall at the net on defense. She had 11 blocks in the two matches combined.
Several other players had recap-worthy matches over the weekend. Sophomore Alison Bruggeman had seven kills and five digs on Friday at St. Olaf and then turned in a match-high 15-di performance at St. Mary's on Saturday. She also had six kills and nine points against the Cardinals. Defensive specialist Rachel Wiinanen had a team-high 10 digs against the Oles and added five more on Saturday and freshman Kelly Reed had identical five kill and 5.5 point stat lines in each match.
