Allegheny Ends Season with Loss to Wittenberg

MEADVILLE, Pa. - The Allegheny Gators closed out their 2011 season, as they hosted no. 6 ranked Wittenberg University on Saturday afternoon. The Gators celebrated their seniors pre-match as Caitlin Rothman, Audra Batdorff, and Winnie Wong would all make their final start in an Allegheny uniform. The celebrating would end soon after, as the Tigers showed exactly why they are ranked in the top ten, as they would hand the Gators a 0-3 (12-25, 23-25, 17-25) loss.

Allegheny would keep pace early with the Tigers, getting within one point at the 7-8 mark of the first set. Wittenberg would pull away though, going up by as many as 13 to take the first set 25-12.

The second set seemed to be going just as the first did, until the Gators put together a couple of very nice rallies. Allegheny would come all the way back to 23-24, when Wittenberg put a stop to the comeback and survived the second set 25-23.

The third set would stay close throughout, as the Gators would stay within shouting distance until a late surge spelled doom for Allegheny's chances.

Rothman would end the game with a team high seven kills, and Batdorff wouldn't be far behind with six. Sophomore Madie Hudac would record a double double, dishing out 16 assists while recording 12 digs. Wong would lead the team with 18 digs, and freshman Kaitlynn Long would add 11 of her own as the Gators will end the season at 11-22 overall, and 4-12 in NCAC play.
