Centre volleyball opens conference play with two wins

Centre's volleyball team opened its Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference season with a pair of comeback 3-2 victories over Millsaps and Rhodes on Saturday in Sewanee, Tenn.

In the day's first match with Millsaps, the Colonels won the first game 25-14, then fell behind after dropping the next two 25-15 and 25-19 respectively. They rebounded to take the fourth game 25-19 and the decicive game five 19-17.

Senior Stephanie Woeste (Louisville, Ky.) had 14 kills and five blocks while Lydia Prevost (Knoxville, Tenn.) had 10 kills. Suzanne Asbury (Louisville, Ky.) added five blocks while Laura Hench (Lexington, Ky.) had 33 digs and Hannah Greer (Owensboro, Ky.) had 38 assists.

Against Rhodes in the second match, Centre dug an even bigger hole, dropping the first two games 25-21 and 25-22 respectively. The Colonels battled back to take the final three games by scores of 25-23, 25-18 and 17-15.

Prevost led the team with 15 kills in the second match while also contributing two blocks. Woeste had 11 kills, while Kim Lownds (Evergreen, Colo.) had nine kills and three aces. Greer had 43 assists and Asbury eight blocks while Kary Stivers (Louisville, Ky.) and Jenna Foushee (Louisville, Ky.) each had 10 digs.

Centre improves to 7-6 on the season and opens SCAC play at 2-0. The Colonels are in Sewanee for two more matches on Sunday, facing Colorado College at noon and Hendrix at 4 p.m.
