Spartan Shorts: Saturday's events are the final tune-up for the Black and Gold before the 2017 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships. Coach Geoff Lambert's programs, who serve as hosts of the HCAC meet Saturday, Oct. 28, have registered a pair of top 10 finishes on the men's and women's side going into the weekend. Both teams have high water marks of runner-up efforts at the home Hokum Karem event in early September … Sophomore women's runner Hannah Wappes (Columbia City, Ind.) and senior men's runner Blake Harris (Fort Wayne, Ind.) has topped individual results throughout 2017. Wappes was the highest finishing Division III finisher at the Greater Louisville Classic Silver race, taking seventh, and turned in a third-place mark at the Indiana Intercollegiate Little State meet. Harris was third at Louisville as the second-best placing Division III runner and turned in runner-up honors at Little State … Junior women's runner Samina Qureshi (Columbia City, Ind.) also had strong results two weekends ago. She completed the E.P. "Tom" Sawyer course in 21st place for her second collegiate top 25 finish. Freshman men's runner Lucas Fontanez (Lowell, Ind.) has been a pleasant addition to the Black and Gold roster, too, ending just one slot shy of the top 25 at the Indiana Intercollegiate Little State event.
