Nichols rallies past Falcons, 9-5

DUDLEY, Mass. – Junior Kendall Meehan (Danvers, Mass.) and freshman Cara Mayhew (Brooklyn, Conn.) each recorded three hits and drove in three in Nichols College's 9-5 win over Fitchburg State in non-conference softball action Wednesday afternoon at the Nichols Softball Field.
Freshman Alexis Ferris (Holyoke, Mass.) pitched a complete game in the circle for the Bison, surrendering five hits and no earned runs while striking out 11. Senior Christina Drake (Lebanon, N.H.) laced three hits while freshman Jessica Kuelling (Gales Ferry, Conn.) was 2-for-3 with one run scored and an RBI.
Fitchburg State scored four times in the third, the last two runs coming on a two-run home run from junior Katie Gildea (Bedford, Mass.). Nichols got two back in its half of the inning on an RBI single from Mayhew and an RBI groundout from senior Jade Palladino (Lynnfield, Mass.).
In the fifth, the Bison pushed across four runs to grab a 6-4 lead. Kuelling singled down the left field line to plate Drake while two more scored on a wild pitch. Sophomore Damari Grossi (Medford, Mass.) cut the Falcons deficit to 6-5 with an RBI single in the sixth before the Bison put up a '3' spot in the bottom half of the inning to extend their lead to 9-5. The big blow came off the bat of Meehan, who drilled an RBI double.
Senior Galen Kerr (Concord, Mass.) took the loss, allowing 12 hits and nine runs (six earned) in six innings. She struck out 12.

Today's games marked the 22nd all-time meetings between Nichols College and Fitchburg State. The Bison lead the series, 12-10.
