GREENSBORO, N.C. – Zach Berkowitz collected a game-high five points in Guilford College's 10-4 men's lacrosse victory over visiting Virginia Wesleyan College Saturday. Berkowitz also hit for a game-high three goals in the Quakers' Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win.
Berkowitz scored twice in the first quarter, which helped Guilford (7-7, 2-5 ODAC) to a 3-2 lead. Teammate Nick Damiano (Greensboro, N.C./Western Guilford) tallied the second-quarter's lone two scores, which gave Guilford a 5-2 halftime lead and triggered a 6-0 run. Aswan Bland netted back-to-back goals 61 seconds apart in the Quakers' three-goal third quarter and Charlie Kiley fired home a man-up goal 25 seconds into the final quarter to finish the outburst.
Virginia Wesleyan's Nick Zepko finally broke the Marlins' drought with 13:36 left in regulation. Teammate Joe Couture followed with an extra-man tally with 10:43 to play before Guilford's Berkowitz finished the game's scoring at the 2:43 mark.
Bland added an assist to his two scores for three points. Damiano tallied twice and teammate Brennan Sweeney had two assists. Aaron Parrish (Kernersville, N.C./East Forsyth) scored a goal and won six-of-eight draws, which helped the Quakers enjoy a 11-6 edge in face-offs won. Will Forrestal picked up a game- and career-high six ground balls. Junior goalie Parker Styles was solid with 14 saves on the 18 Virginia Wesleyan shots on goal. He also had four ground balls and caused a turnover. Guilford enjoyed a 35-19 advantage in ground balls and killed off four-of-five Marlins' man-up chances.
Zepko paced Virginia Wesleyan's offense with two goals. Teammate Matt Baldwin had two assists, three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Chris McTague played the first three quarters in goal and made nine saves against 17 shots on goal. Philip Venanzi finished the game with four stops in the final quarter.
