NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz softball team took both games of a doubleheader against SUNYAC opponent The College at Brockport on Saturday afternoon at Mary Gray Deane Field. The Hawks' four seniors were honored prior to game one to commemorate senior day.
The Hawks (12-14, 8-4 SUNYAC) will next host a doubleheader against Mount Saint Mary College on Tuesday, April 18. The Golden Eagles (13-13, 3-7 SUNYAC) will next travel to the University of Rochester for a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 19.
Game One: New Paltz 3, Brockport 2 (10 innings)
Senior catcher Nicole DeCosta (Stormville, N.Y./John Jay-East Fishkill) opened the scoring in the bottom half of the fourth inning with an RBI single that drove in two. Brockport got on the board in the fifth inning on an RBI double from freshman shortstop Meghan Cullen to make it a 2-1 game.
With one out in the seventh inning, senior outfielder Kathleen Laskey hit a game-tying home run off the first pitch she saw. The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the 10th inning.
Freshman second baseman Caroline Alicandri (Pearl River, N.Y./Pearl River) was placed on second base to lead off the 10th. She advanced to third on a groundout by sophomore shortstop Taylor LaFrance (New Windsor, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) before a wild pitch brought Alicandri home to give New Paltz the win.
Junior pitcher Lauren Cappello (New City, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) tossed all 10 innings and gave up just two runs on nine hits while striking out three.
Offensively, senior outfielder Fallon Spriggs (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Cappello, DeCosta, Alicandri and junior outfielder Julia Perhacs (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) each recorded one hit in the contest.
Game Two: New Paltz 7, Brockport 0
Spriggs scored the first run of the game on a passed ball in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Hawks tacked on six more runs in the bottom of the sixth on RBIs from LaFrance, sophomore second baseman Shannon Fee (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Earl L. Vandermeulen), senior pitcher Kiersten Carlomagno (Commack, N.Y./Commack), senior catcher Megan Carbia (Tomkins Cove, N.Y./North Rockland) and junior outfielder Taylor Leonette (East Patchogue, N.Y./Bellport).
Carlomagno started the game and pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing just one hit to Cullen in the fourth inning.
Spriggs went 2-for-4 at the plate, while scoring two runs and stealing two bases. Fee went 2-for-2 with an RBI, a walk and a run scored.
