Lancers Take Two From Anchorwomen

Providence, R.I.--Sophomore catcher Emma Simmons (Saunderstown, RI) went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI as the Rhode Island College softball team was swept by Worcester State in a non-conference doubleheader played at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex on Wednesday afternoon. Worcester State won, 10-1 (five innings), in the opener and completed the sweep with a 6-2 victory in the nightcap.

RIC (6-10) senior left field Sarah Molin (Seymour, CT) chipped in with a pair of hits and drove in a run in the twinbill for the Anchorwomen.

Junior first baseman Sydney Despres (Sterling, MA) paced Worcester State (7-13) in the two contests, going 5-for-7 with three runs scored and five RBI, while senior center fielder Corrie Derosier (Shrewsbury, MA) was 5-for-7 with two runs scored and two RBI.

In the opener, Worcester State got on the board first when an RBI single from senior catcher Courtney Salisbury (Cranston, RI) in the top of the first put the Lancers up 1-0. RIC responded in the bottom of the second after sophomore third baseman Cristin Chiaverini (Pawtucket, RI) led off with a single and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by freshman right fielder Shaelyn DaSilveira (Seekonk, MA) to knot the game at 1-1.

Worcester State broke the game open in the top of the third when they plated eight runs, including a two-run single from Derosier and a two-run home run from Despres to take the 9-1 advantage. Six of the runs scored during the third for WSU were unearned. Despres then added an RBI single in the top of the fifth to put the Lancers up by nine, 10-1. RIC plated a run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from junior designated player Kelsey Wood North Dighton, MA) to make the score 10-2. That would be it for the Anchorwomen as the game was halted after the fifth due to the eight-run rule.

Senior pitcher Dakota Smith-Porter (Montague, MA) picked up the win, allowing two runs on six hits to go along with three strikeouts.

The nightcap saw Worcester State again get on the board first after an RBI double by Despres put the Lancers up 1-0 in the top of the third. RIC threatened in the bottom of the frame, but left runners at second and third base. Smith-Porter belted her third home run of the season in the top of the fourth, a two-run shot to center field, put the Lancers up 3-0.

The Anchorwomen got on the board in the bottom of the fourth after an RBI double down the left field line from Simmons plated Wood to make the score 3-1. Simmons then came around to score to an RBI single from Molin to make the score 3-2 after four innings of play.

Worcester State answered in the top of the fifth and upped its lead to 5-2 on a two-run single from Smith-Porter. The visiting Lancers added to their lead in the top of the sixth when an RBI single on a line drive down the left field made the score 6-2.
