Worcester State Washes Out RIC, 17-6

Worcester, Mass.-Sophomore attacker Tess Bradley (Tiverton, RI) scored three goals and dished out a pair of assists, but it wouldn't be enough as the Rhode Island College women's lacrosse team dropped a 17-6 rain-soaked decision at Worcester State on Thursday night. The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Anchorwomen.


Senior midfielder Betsey Heidel (Warwick, RI) added a pair of goals in the loss for RIC (2-5).


Worcester State (2-6) senior midfielder Alexis Sutherland (Tyngsboro, MA) and freshman midfielder Sarah Cohan (Lowell, MA) each tallied a hat trick in the win for the hosts.


Worcester State jumped out to the early lead with six unanswered goals, which included two from junior midfielerd Mackenzie Little (Marlboro, MA). RIC got on the board with 17:00 minutes left in the first half on a goal from Heidel to cut the lead to five, 6-1. The Lancers then tallied three straight, including what would prove to be the game-winner from Sutherland on a free position shot, to make the score 7-1 with 16:11 left in the stanza. Worcester State took the 16-5 lead heading into halftime and cruised to the victory.


Worcester State held a 30-12 advantage in shots and a 15-9 advantage in ground balls for the game. The Lancers also had a 16-6 advantage in draw controls.


RIC sophomore goalkeeper Julia Eaton (Cumberland, RI) made eight saves, while senior netminder Krissy Pessa (Walpole, MA) had three stops in the win for Worcester State.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will resume Little East Conference play at home against Keene State on Saturday, April 8 (1 p.m.).
