Anchorwomen Top Falcons, 5-2

Fitchburg, Mass.--The Rhode Island College women's soccer team defeated Fitchburg State, 5-2 in a non-conference contest on Wednesday evening.


Rhode Island College (6-9-2) jumped out to the early lead when sophomore midfielder Elena Couto (Coventry, RI) tallied her first collegiate goal just 3:30 into the contest to give the Anchorwomen the 1-0 lead. Fitchburg State (6-11) responded at the 16:08 mark as junior forward Whitney Mansfield (Lunenberg, MA) scored an unassisted goal to knot the game at one goal apiece.


The host Falcons then took the 2-1 lead in the 29th minute when senior forward Victoria Flock (East Taunton, MA) scored after a feed from sophomore midfielder Maddie Medina (Pelham, NH). Fitchburg State controlled the action offensively in the first half and held the one goal lead until late in the stanza when RIC sophomore Eleni Grammas (Cranston, RI) put in her own rebound to tie the game 2-2 at the 41:34 mark.  The match headed into halftime tied, 2-2, despite Fitchburg State holding a 12-6 advantage in shots for the first 45 minutes of action.


 RIC regained the advantage in the 51st minute when sophomore defender Kori DelPrete (Foster, RI)recorded her first collegiate goal, an unassisted tally to put the Anchorwomen up, 3-2. RIC tacked on an insurance goal at the 55:43 mark as senior midfielder Chelsea Combs (Ashford, CT) converted a penalty kick to make the score 4-2. Sophomore forward Brittany DeGrooth (Westerly, RI) became the fifth different scorer for RIC as she put home an unassisted goal at the 57:08 mark to propel RIC to the 5-2 victory.


Junior goalkeeper Brianna Sousa (Warwick, RI) tallied nine saves in goal for RIC, while sophomore goalkeeper Shelby Gale (Rockport, MA) notched four stops for Fitchburg State in the setback.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will close out the regular season with a Little East Conference game at Eastern Connecticut on Saturday, Oct. 29 (1 p.m.).
