New Paltz Men’s Soccer Ends in Scoreless Draw At Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer squad battled Hudson River rival Vassar College to a scoreless, 0-0 double overtime draw on Wednesday afternoon.

With the tie, the Hawks move to 3-0-3 on the season and will prepare to host non-conference foe Bard College for their home opener on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 4 p.m. at South Turf Field.

Offensively, the Hawks fired off 13 total shots but could not find the back of the net, tallying just four shots on goal for the match. Junior midfielder Ben Zilka (Levittown, NY/General Douglas MacArthur) led the team with three shots while freshman forward Luke Dole (Delmar, NY/Bethlehem) followed with two shots off the bench.

Junior keeper John Guzzo (Carle Place, NY/Carle Place) played the duration of the match, recording five saves. The Brewers (5-0-1) nearly scored in the 42nd minute off a penalty kick but luckily the shot hit the post to keep the match scoreless.

Overall, Vassar outshot the Hawks 17-13 and held a 9-5 edge in corner kicks. As is the case in all rivalry games, this contest was chippy as both teams accounted for five yellow cards.
